Most of you know that 3hobby.net first came online back in May 2004. The website was created by SlowSteady, with the help of inputs from a few fellow racers, most notably our founder member and my evil twin SmoothSteady. The objective of the website is to promote and increase participation of the hobby/sport of OnRoad RC nitro racing by:-
- Showcasing the excitement of the hobby/sport via videos and pictures.
- Encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experience through reviews and race reports.
- Foster open and friendly discussions for the good of the sport/hobby.
- Advertise events to motivate beginners as well as seasoned racers to participate.
Version 1, or the v1 of 3hobby.net was run using php-Nuke as a CMS and while it is efficient, it is notorious for security holes and keeping up with patches to keep the website online was getting more and more time consuming. It also goes without saying that it also "broke" some features that I would like to implement or have implemented that I feel were conducive to the promotion of the hobby/sport and this is not good.
It is now time to move on and while the learning will be steep for me, with the help of new founder members Julius and IanHobbies together with SmoothSteady (yes, he IS still around), I will push on with the original objectives of 3hobby.net v1 but now with 3hobby.net Revisited or v2 for short.
You will see some of the old content and features from v1 no longer here while others were brought over and enhanced. The reason is simple. I spend a lot of time creating content and it was time to take a close look at what is it that members and visitors were looking at when they visited v1. I started a Forum thread over at v1 asking members what they liked or not liked and after some minimal input from those who care while the majority had not much to say, I've decided to study the logs and see what parts of v1 were visited and used the most. Those popular ones will be implemented here at v2 and the rest will be archived away on my hard disk while the rest deleted to save server space.
In summary, what v1 surfers looked for, according to the logs and some input from Founder Members are :-
- RC related news.
- Shout Box for chit-chatting.
- Forums for discussions, Clubs as well as some selling/buying.
- Downloads for set-up sheets and videos.
- Articles for learning or fun reading.
In the meantime v2 will have some enhancements too. Here is a short list of what they are :-
- Upload Videos - there is a server space limitation of course but you can upload RC videos here.
- Featured Videos - will only feature short sample clips of the latest videos that I make.
- Community - its like having your own webpage on 3hobby.net Revisited with the following features:-
- Your own picture gallery.
- Your own video gallery.
- Your own list of forum posts.
- Your contact details you may wish to share with registered members.
- Your "connections" with other member so that you can email them directly from 3hobby.net.
- And your3hobby.net League results summary.
